The Possibility of Health
Health is a dynamic state of being. Webster defines it as “the condition of being sound in body, mind, or spirit.” Sound means “free from injury or disease,” while disease is defined as “a condition that impairs normal functioning and is typically manifested by distinguishing signs and symptoms.”
The normal function of a human body is to express life. It maintains homeostasis, carries out essential processes like metabolism, respiration, and digestion, and coordinates complex systems for movement, growth, and healing. When we are in alignment with these natural processes, we experience health. When we act in ways that disrupt them, we experience disease.
Yet, disease does not arise from a deficiency of drugs, nor does health come from taking something external, like a pill, injection, or other intervention. If that were true, then logically, we would take those substances when we are healthy to maintain our health. But we don’t. Why? Because deep down, we know that health is not something that can be given to us from the outside.
If you believe that health comes from a product, you will only ever rise as high as that product allows. And if you want to know where that ceiling is, just read the side effects on the label. True health isn’t something you buy, it is something that already exists within you, always present, waiting to be expressed.
Yet, we live in a world that constantly sells us the idea that someone else holds the key to our well-being. That health is something we must purchase, rather than something we cultivate through the way we live. Meanwhile, we are encouraged to continue the very habits that led to illness in the first place, until the time comes to start taking a substance to suppress the symptoms of an unhealthy lifestyle. When seen with clear eyes, this approach is absurd.
Einstein famously said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” So what does it mean to be sane? By definition, sanity means “proceeding from a sound mind” or being rational. Rationality requires us to observe, reason, and come to conclusions that lead to meaningful action.
It is possible to reason ourselves into believing we are stuck, that our circumstances cannot change, that we are at the mercy of genetics, fate, or external solutions. But that is insane reasoning. True change begins when we open ourselves up to possibility.
Possibility is defined as “something having an indicated potential.” Potential is “something that can develop or become actual.” The greatest barrier to possibility is believing that what already is is all that can be. If we only perceive the world through the lens of our current reality, we may conclude that we are stuck. That nothing can change. Possibility exists outside of what we can see, it is found in the realm of the unexpressed, in the subconscious, within us.
This is where the possibility of health begins. Not in a prescription. Not in an external fix. But within.
While external assistance may sometimes be necessary, true healing and transformation comes from within. And it starts with a decision to change. First, we open ourselves up to the possibility of change. Then, we allow ourselves to become the expression of that change.
Consider Thomas Edison. When he set out to invent the light bulb, no such thing existed in the physical world. It existed only in the realm of imagination. He saw the possibility of it before anyone else did. It took over 1,000 attempts to bring that possibility into reality. What if he had looked at the darkness around him and thought, “Light is impossible”? What if, after 999 failures, he had given up? What drove him forward? His ability to look beyond what was and see what could be, to see possibility.
Possibility emerges when we quiet our minds, when we step beyond what is familiar and allow new perceptions to arise. We can cultivate this awareness through meditation, exercise, clean eating, and consciously clearing out the limiting beliefs that dictate what we think is possible.
To truly embrace possibility, we must recognize the source of life itself. When you see the possibility in that source, and recognize that you are that power, you open yourself to something far greater than what your physical senses can perceive.
If you seek change in your health or any aspect of your life opening yourself up to possibility it an important first step. Like any skill, the more you practice it, the stronger it becomes. Developing the ability to bring forth possibility allows you to meet the call of life, to adapt to any challenge, and to create a new reality.
Adaptability is intelligence. Intelligence is possibility. And possibility is your birthright. The power is already within you. You simply have to see it and allow yourself to become it.
